Why You Should Dress Well

By Andy Beaudoin on February 8, 2013

I have sort of a weird confession and I think it’s time to come clean about it: fashion is important. I mean this sincerely and not in any way to emasculate myself. No, my reason for holding the way you dress at such a high standard comes from the daily march of human slothness that roams the campus in sweatpants and Ugg boots.

Can you imagine if that were all gone? If no one ever wore sweat pants to a public place ever again? We would no longer have to read “Juicy” on someone’s derriere or see the brown homogenous boot globs, more commonly known as Ugg boots (they look like rolls of baby fat). What a joy that would be!

Fortunately, dressing yourself is a.) not hard and b.) not a lot of work, but for some reason, people can get their degrees in something as impossible as theoretical physics and not bother to find a shirt that fits. So, to keep this article from turning into a rant, I consulted my friend Nai Breezy, who knows fashion and knows how to find stuff for cheap.

Breezy agrees that people on campus get lazy when it comes to dressing well.

I absolutely hate college fashion,” she said. “It’s so sad because the same people that dress like bums Monday through Friday are the same people that go out on Saturday night and wow your pants off because they look so amazing.”

Breezy emphasizes the importance of “dressing to impress” because it shows that you care about a situation (this is why job interview suits are so important). Unfortunately, you can’t avoid people judging you by your appearance, but you should respect yourself and the ways people are going to inevitably look at you. While Nai’s mentioned partiers might look good on the weekend, let’s not forget that those girls are usually freezing after intentionally forgetting their coats at home in the winter. That’s disrespectful to your own body. And to us folks who are staying warm in the winter, we can’t help but to also lose our respect for you when you pass us on the street.

It’s not so much the “wow”-ing that needs improving on campus, just the sensibility. If you respect yourself and what you’re wearing, then the people around you will too. It’s that easy and people, Breezy said, we’ll act differently too.

The way you dress sometimes does the talking for you. People just come up to me and start having a conversation with me because they are intrigued by my style,” she said. “For me, dressing nice makes me feel good.” Breezy has her own interesting style, but that doesn’t mean you need to obsess with how you look, just your conscience.

However, if you’re looking for something new or interesting, Breezy suggests eBay. In fact, she swears by it. For her, it starts with the right word.

My favorite search words are ‘vintage, classic, sequin, sheer, Urban Outfitters, bohemian, Korean, Japanese, off-the shoulder, collar, ruffle etc.’ Then I narrow my search by price, location, new and used,” Breezy said.

She believes that people are definitely skeptical when it comes to eBay shopping even though it’s usually a safe bet.

“Another good strategy is buying stuff from the same seller. Unlike regular online shopping, you get a standard shipping price for your check-out cart plus tax, but each item on E-bay has its own shipping price.”

Breezy has turned her eBbay shopping into a bit of an obsession, she said, but has so many good finds that she plans on starting a blog about the process.

Dressing is something everyone does everyday and something that they should be more conscious about. It’s not so much that you should dress fantastically every single day, but dress sensibly. Guys, this goes for us too. Girls seem to fret about it more (they have more options), but that doesn’t mean we get to be lazy about dressing well.

Who knows, maybe we are all doomed to wear sweatpants eternally in the future, but for the time being, I’m wearing pants.
