It really takes someone like Rauk to make a Latin class what it's supposed to be
Cons: Assigned a bit too much homework
Exams were very tough
Overall, Dr. Rauk is awesome. Having him explain what "Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo" means is just hilarious, plus all of the engaging discussions about if Catullus literally meant a sparrow or his penis in a given poem were always ridiculous.
It's just sad that MSU doesn't value Latin enough to encourage people to take it, meaning that awesome professors like him have to teach watered-down nonsense like IAH.
Cons: He's pretty boring. I don't know how I manage to stay awake most of the time. And the class is way too long. It's about an hour and half, but it feels so much longer. He expects you to remember random facts for the exams. And at the end of the semester you have an 8 page research paper you have to write on a topic of your choice related to myth.
He's just okay. If this is your only resort for an upper level IAH class, then take it. Just be warned there is alot of weekly readings and you have a large research paper (8 pages) due at the end of the semester, along with two exams throughout the semester. I really hate writing, so I'm regretting taking this class.
He helps( pretty much gives you the answer) with everything!
Research Project not too hard and many selections of types of project to display.
Cons: *Monotone voice, can be very boring at times for 1 hour and 50 minutes.
*Very Critical to go to class everyday
*Have to read 7 different books each semester
The class is very interesting if you love Zeus, Hera, Heracles, Odysseus and Greek myths/Heroes.
Somewhat interesting
Cons: Monotone
Research project
Rauk is very monotone but he definitely loves the subject. He starts class a few minutes early every day which is annoying and he talks the WHOLE class. Mythology is somewhat interesting but can get repetitive. His exams aren't too hard, mostly identifying people and events. I just use Spark Notes instead of read the actual books and that has worked so far. You watch a couple interesting movies. It's probably one of the better IAHs but not the best.
-Can get away with Spark notes & taking class notes.
-The writing assignments are do after a class discussion, therefore if you have no idea what to write, you can just rephrase what someone else says.
Cons: -Cannot afford to miss lectures, you WILL miss major points that he WILL put on the exam.
-Too many books for one semester.
Cool Guy! A bit boring sometimes, but an easy 3.5, if you want a 4.0 DO THE READINGS!
But to like the class you have to be very smart, have awesome memorization skills, be a fast reader and generally one of those 4.0 smart kids from high school that genuinely likes intellectual subjects and either coasted because you were smart or you worked your butt off. If you're just an in-between person, you'll probably fail.
